In this edition, we learn about the benefits of mediation and find out about a record fine for an intellectual property scam. We cover new developments in recruitment law and consider trends in the property market, as well as congratulate Chris Sherliker and Dee Aylward on their charity fundraising efforts.

There is a look at the recent Connaught Alumni Network meeting and we discuss what the future holds for Volkswagen.

Facilitative mediation – describing the elephant

I am often asked what mediation is, how it works, and why it works. Answering this question reminds me a bit of John Godfrey Saxe’s poem, “The Blind Men and the Elephant”. Everyone has their own understanding of what mediation is just as the six blind men in Saxe’s poem had six different descriptions of an elephant. John Abbott, Silverman Sherliker’s Head of Dispute Resolution, explains the value of mediation as an alternative means of resolving legal disputes.

Intellectual property scam results in record £500,000 fine

The Intellectual Property and Enterprise Court (IPEC) has recently handed down its maximum fine to Intellectual Property Agency Limited (IPAL) and Harri Mattias Jonasson. The company, controlled by Jonasson, routinely sent out huge numbers of ‘renewal reminders’ to legitimate owners of registered trademarks and patents. These renewals were posted well in advance of the necessary date and quoted vastly inflated fees. Robert MacGinn explains how the law came down on the perpetrators, and why brand owners must remain alert.

Employment law: Introductions in recruitment

There have been two new introductions in relation to the recruitment processes in recent months; an ACAS Guide available for all employers regarding staff recruitment and an agreement with some organisations to operate recruitment on a name-blind basis. Employment partner Victoria Brockley explains.

Property market trends and how to ride the wave

The property market has changed dramatically in the last twelve months thanks to 2014’s Autumn Statement. Paralegal Rowan Shacklock-Hendry explains more.

Sober October raises £800 for Macmillan

We raise a glass to congratulate Chris Sherliker and Dee Aylward, whose steely determination in Staying Sober for October raised £800 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The October 2015 Connaught Alumni Meeting

Silverman Sherliker LLP supports the Connaught Alumni Network and was delighted that Solicitor Martin Donoghue hosted a recent event.

Where next for VW?

Volkswagen, the pioneers of German engineering and a company hallmarked for its impeccable quality and commitment to producing cars of the future. A name which in recent weeks has been tarnished, wiping billions off its value and leaving customers reeling that its cars could be involved in such a damaging scandal. Trainee solicitor Maha Sahota reviews the developments in a legal story that is bound to run and run.
